 Emilio with his Musi-Can
Q. Emilio, tell us about you equipment. What do you use, both hardware and software, in your daily work?
I'm primarily using Performer as the main sequencer, doing my charts on Sibelius. I have a master keyboard from Midiman and I try to travel with a laptop, and it was always my dream to have a portable Gigastudio [system], and then the Musi-Can came along!
Q. How did you find out about Coyote R&D and our Musi-Can systems?
Through my friend, Daniel Hamuy, who was marveled at that point that something smaller than a house could carry all the Gigastudio sounds.
Q. Why did you choose to buy a Musi-Can instead of a Carrillon or MusicXPC or some other PC system?
I believe that Gigastudio needs a dedicated computer without having to have all the bad influences of installations from other programs, and it's easier for me to understand too. And indeed, having had an XP system, I'm marveled at how fast the Musi-Can works -- much faster than the XP system. Of course the advantage of being able to use the Mac to control the Musi-Can is way beyond my dreams. Also, having the Musi-Can as a separate unit doesn't make it as taxing to the sequencer.
Q. You were using another PC system for Gigastudio. Tell us about your first PC system.
I had a regular PC setup with Gigastudio -- it had crashed and was not working properly, and it took me a while to make it stable. I run the PC with an Aardvark card that it still doesn't have all the upgrades needed for the digital not to pop or the MIDI to run fast enough.
Q. What happened after we came in and fixed it?
I needed two Gigastudio systems to expand the studio. I switched to the Musi-Can as the primary Gigastudio system and I have them networked so I can go back and forth and make a powerhouse out of both the PC and Musi-Can -- they work together flawlessly.
Q. How has the Musi-Can been working out for you?
It's been terrific for me! I had to record with the London Philharmonic and had the Musi-Can play the demos in the background. So it was extremely functional for me to travel with a Macintosh laptop, a keyboard, an audio interface, and the Musi-Can. It made me always feel at home.
Q. You recently took your G4 Powerbook and the Musi-Can system with you to Germany for an Ice Capades show you were working on. How did the remote control and NetMIDI software work out for you there?
It worked flawlessly! It [MIDI] is much faster now and it made it very easy to have an orchestral Gigastudio with full sound in a hotel room.
Emilio using the remote control and NetMIDI software on his Mac.
Q. What is you favorite feature of the Musi-Can?
Of course, my favorite feature is the size!
Q. Are you planning to buy more Musi-Cans?
Yes! And I enjoy the fact that I don't have to have a wall of PCs making noise -- I love that the Musi-Can is so silent.
Coyote R&D would like to thank Emilio for taking the time to talk with us about his experiences with our Musi-Can systems.
